 Annotated Transcript

Below are a list of courses that make up my Master of Arts in Education degree.

Internship Year

Fall 2011-Spring 2012

TE 802: Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice I

Instructor: Cheryl Rosaen

This course focused on literacy in the classroom.  Throughout this course I created a unit based on Natalie Babbit's book Tuck Everlasting to teach to my 5th grade class.  Weekly class meetings offered a time for interns to share lesson plans with peers to get feedback and to dicuss challenges faced in the classroom.  We also practiced different teaching techniques such as using book clubs to generate discussion and using picture books to teach literary devices.

TE 803: Professional Roles and Teaching Practice II

Instructor: Chris Kaiser

This course focused on teaching social studies and working with students with special needs.  Throughout this course I collaborated with a fellow intern to create a unit about the American Revolution to teach to my 5th grade class.  I also worked with other interns to research how to better serve students on the autism spectrum.  I also learned from my peers about a variety of ways to accomdate students who have learning disabilities.

TE 804: Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice II

Instructor: Hayat Alhokayem

This course focused on teaching science in elementary classrooms.  We focused on having students create and draw models of their scientific thinking as a way to share their ideas with their peers.  During this course I collaborated with a fellow intern to create a unit about light and sound energy to teach to my 5th grade class. From this class I learned the importance of having students reflect on the way their learning has changed over the course of a unit.

Fall 2013

CEP 832: Educating Students with Challenging Behavior

Instructor: Evelyn Oka and Vicky Mousouli

The focus of this course was to learn how to work with the variety of students that make up a classroom.  Each unit focused on different types of students and how to best meet their needs in the classroom environment.  I enjoyed being able to try new methods in my class as soon as I read about them and see their immediate impact on the behavior of my students.  This course equipped me with many tools and resources to face the challenges that students create in the classroom.

TE 846: Accomodating Differences in Literacy Learners

Instructor: Chad Waldron

This course focused on how to differentiate instruction for a wide range of literacy learners found in a classroom.  We learned about a variety of assessments to use to learn more about our students and their abilities.  I enjoyed practicing using these assessments on my own students to see how much information they could provide and how the data from these assessments could help guide my instruction. I also enjoyed working with a variety of teachers (Spanish, P.E., high school, mathematics) to see how their instruction was influenced by the literacy needs of their students.

Spring 2014

TE 848: Writing Assessment and Instruction

Instructor: Kati Macaluso

In this course I had to step into the shoes of my students and become a writer. I was not only writing, but also thinking about how I felt while attempting unfamilar writing styles.  This gave me more insight to how my students feel when I ask them to write and how it could be difficult for students to put thier ideas onto paper.  We also discussed assessment of writing and I researched different writing assessment styles including holistic grading and using the 6+1 Traits to assess writing.

CEP 805: Learning Math with Technology

Instructor: Ralph Putnam and Erin Stehr

Math has always been my favorite subject, so I was excited to learn how to incorporate more technology into my math teaching. This course taught me how to assess math websites to determine if they would be useful in the classroom.  It also introduced me to many great online resources available to enrich math learning such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Illunimations website.  Finally, during this course I created my own resource website full of ideas and links to use while teaching math to my 4th grade students.

Summer 2014

TE 838: Children's Literature in Film

Instructor: Laura Apol

My students love when we can watch a movie in school so I thought this course would be great to see how to incorporate film into the classroom in a meaningful way.  During this course we learned how to "read" film and to think about the choices the director has made.  We discussed the differences between books and film and what makes those differences significant.  I especially enjoyed analyzing Harry Potter and The Fault in Our Stars and thinking about how these books and films could be used in the classroom.

Fall 2014

ED 800: Educational Inquiry

Instructor: Scott Weiland and Nathan Clason

I am currently enrolled in this course which is designed to introduce the ideas of some important minds of educational ideaology such as John Dewey and Vivian Paley.  I enjoyed reading Paley's book The Girl with the Brown Crayon. It reinforced for me the importance of self-reflection as a teacher. This class has also helped me think about the outside influences that affect my students' learning in my classroom.

ED 870: Capstone Seminar

Instructor: Matt Koehler, Brittany Dillman, Spencer Greenhalgh, and Sarah Keenan

I am currently enolled in this capstone course and it is giving me the opprotunity to reflect upon what I have learned during my time in the Master of Arts in Education (MAED)  program.  It is also helping me gather and organize all of my coursework to create a polished, web-based portfolio to show what I have accomplished while working on my master's degree. I have enjoyed being able to look back at how I have grown as a teacher during my time in the MAED program.  I also liked learning about the qualities of good web design and hope to apply this knowledge on other websites I have created.
